Today is our second snow day in Iowa. As you can see, winter has added another blanket overnight and the winds are starting to pick up. The kids are up and about, the dogs have been fed, and I've had my two cups of coffee already. Let's pick up from where we were yesterday with, "What Iowa teachers do with a snow day." I reflected some more about the gift of time.
Time has allowed me to connect with other educators yesterday and already today. I can guarantee that teachers all over Iowa with inclement weather are connecting with one another. Connecting makes us better practitioners. I've talked on the phone with some teacher friends, I've tweeted some teacher friends, and read several educational blogs. I've learned about how to make my lessons better for teaching author purpose (our current literacy focus) through these discussions and reading.
What makes this gift of time different than what we can do on a normal school week without a snow day? We still connect, we still read and tweet and blog, however, it's usually after 5 p.m. when we are in the midst of our other lives...eating dinner, going to sporting events, cleaning, etc. For those of us with families, it usually has to wait until everyone is asleep...in the late night hours to get the uninterrupted time to think, but by then, we are exhausted and need to sleep.
For my Iowa teacher friends reading this blog, make time to connect today with other teachers. Even though we are stuck inside our homes, we have social media to collaborate and connect without being rushed and hurried.
